Hypatia (370-415 ce), the Last Great Pagan Philosopher
She was an accomplished mathematician and philosopher, a great teacher for both pagans and Christians in the city of Alexandria. She was renowned for her intellectual gifts and as a great teacher, and for her eloquence, modest and beautiful. In March of 412 a mob of Christian monks, encouraged it would seem by a famous Church father, tore her to pieces on the streets of the great city. I remember her each March as a martyr at the hands of religious fanatics. Her story carries a lesson for our own time.
